Needle Thrust Roller Bearings
Needle thrust roller bearings are fitted with a form-stable cage to retain and guide many needle rollers reliably. Needle thrust roller bearings provide a high degree of stiffness within a minimum axial space. In applications where the faces of adjacent machine components can serve as raceways, needle thrust roller bearings take up no more space than a conventional thrust washer. Needle thrust roller bearings are valued for their minimal height and the high number of rolling elements. As such, they are occasionally implemented without a shaft or housing washer; when suitable, the rolling elements are in direct contact with the rotating components.
Some Inherent Features of Needle Thrust Roller Bearing
This type of bearing is widely used in applications, such as high-pressure pumps, machine tools, industrial machines, and so on, owing to its intrinsic features.
- Needle thrust roller bearings can handle heavy axial loads, as well as peak loads. This is possible through a deviation of the rolling elements by a small diameter.
- They have a long service life, for the roller ends are slightly tapered to not undergo stress peaks. This small change in design helps roller ends change the line contact between the rolling elements and the raceway.
Different Types of Needle Thrust Roller Bearings
Based on the requirements, a needle thrust roller bearing is designed to give the following variants.
- Needle thrust roller bearing, with cage thrust assemblies: This bearing variant is available in different sizes and dimensions to support axial loads in only 1 direction. Where there are no nearby components to serve as washers, you can have raceways combined with the bearing to use it.
- Multi-direction bearing: This type of needle thrust roller bearing asks for similar hardness and surface finish to intermediate washers. You can have a double-direction approach by integrating two-needle thrust roller bearings, cage thrust assemblies, 2 raceways, and a medium washer.
- Needle thrust roller bearing with a centering flange: You can design this using a needle thrust roller bearing with cage thrust assemblies, a thrust washer, and a centering flange, which helps correctly center the washer radially.
Applications of Needle Thrust Roller Bearings
Here are examples of applications in which needle thrust roller bearings might be used:
- Industrial pumps
- Gearboxes
- Electric motors
