What is gear mesh frequency and how is it calculated?+
GMF = N x n/60, where N is the number of teeth on the gear rotating at speed n (in rpm). A 40-tooth ring gear at 360 rpm: GMF = 40 x 6 = 240 Hz. The same result from the pinion: 10-tooth pinion at 1,440 rpm = 10 x 24 = 240 Hz. The gear mesh frequency is the fundamental frequency of gear noise and its integer multiples (2x, 3x, 4x GMF) are typically present in the spectrum. Peaks at these frequencies confirm gear mesh as the noise source.
My bevel gearbox was quiet when new but is getting louder. What is happening?+
Progressive noise increase from a previously quiet drive is almost always caused by tooth wear (increasing profile error), bearing wear (increasing shaft movement), or lubricant degradation (decreasing film thickness and friction modifier depletion). Slow increase over years suggests normal wear. Rapid increase over weeks suggests lubricant failure or contamination ingress. Draw an oil sample for laboratory analysis as the first step. Elevated iron indicates gear wear; elevated all metals indicates abrasive contamination through a failed seal.
Is it safe to continue operating a noisy bevel gear drive?+
It depends entirely on the nature and cause of the noise. Warrant immediate shutdown: a sharp periodic click or knock (possible tooth fracture), a sudden step-change increase in noise level (possible tooth or bearing failure), metallic grinding or scraping sounds (adhesive wear in progress), or any noise accompanied by rapid housing temperature increase. Why does my gearbox make more noise in cold weather?+
Two primary causes: the gear oil viscosity at low temperature is much higher than at operating temperature, preventing adequate oil flow into the tooth contact zone and creating boundary lubrication conditions with friction-induced noise until oil warms. Second, thermal contraction of the housing reduces backlash and increases bearing preload, both contributing to NVH. The solution is switching to a synthetic gear oil with high viscosity index – it maintains much lower cold viscosity while providing adequate high-temperature film thickness, dramatically reducing cold-start NVH duration.
How does AGMA quality grade affect bevel gear noise?+
AGMA quality grade defines pitch, profile, lead, and runout tolerances – tighter tolerances mean more accurate teeth, smaller transmission error, and lower NVH. The relationship is approximately 2-4 dB(A) per grade step at typical industrial pitch line velocities of 5-15 m/s. Upgrading from AGMA 9 to AGMA 11 can reduce gear mesh NVH by 4-8 dB(A). At higher speeds, the benefit per grade is larger. The cost premium is proportional: AGMA 11 costs approximately 25-40% more than AGMA 9 for the same gear set, but for noise-sensitive or high-speed applications this premium is almost always justified.
What is the Australian workplace noise limit and how does bevel gear noise relate to it?+
